Since it’s a preorder, I think Maxis is only offering limited options for subscribers. When the device is fully launched into our  market, 11 April 2014, the telco should be opening up the regular options like TalkMore78 with 1GB of data, TalkMore48 with 3GB data, and TalkMore28 with more data options. All preorders will receive their Samsung Galaxy S5 on the launch day itself.

Unfortunately, this preorder from Maxis is only for those subscribing for a new number. All you existing Maxis customers will have to wait for the next preorder, which will be happening on 3 April 2014.

Check out our exclusive review of the device or visit Maxis now for more information or to make your preorder.

Leak: DiGi to Revise its New DiGi SmartPlan 50 with Better Value [Update]

New-DiGi-SmartPlan-with-4G-LTE

Remember the new DiGi SmartPlan postpaid plans that was unveiled by the telco earlier this month? It offered postpaid plans from as low as RM50/month and it looks like the telco will be revising its cheapest plan to offer even more value at the same price. According to our sources, DiGi will be revising its SmartPlan 50 to give double the value at the same price.

[Update] Sorry for the error earlier, the revised SmartPlan postpaid plans will come with additional freebies on top of what’s being offered right now, which means you will get extra 100 free minutes and 100 free SMS.

With Whatsapp, Telegram and all the other mobile messaging apps out there, will you actually use up the free SMS provided by your telcos? According to our sources, the revised SmartPlan 50 will come with all of the usual stuffs like 2GB of internet, 200 free SMS, unlimited WhatsApp messaging, unlimited surfing on Opera Mini as well as free DiGi visual voicemail, and an additional 100 minutes of talk time and 100 SMS to all network. On top of that, while the plan does not come with a contract, meaning you can join and leave anytime you want, but if you commit to a 12 months contract, the telco will offer a RM5 monthly rebate for the entire contract duration, allowing subscribers to save an additional RM60 in total.

This means that with the additional calls and messages, SmartPlan 50 will have a total of 100 minutes of talk time to all network, and 300 SMS (100 all net, 200 on net). According to our sources, DiGi might also extend the additional 100 minutes and 100 SMS for its SmartPlan 78 as well, so fingers crossed because 100 minutes and 100 SMS is worth a total of RM25 based on the call and SMS rates from DiGi (15sen/min & 10sen/SMS).

Do note that this is just a leak so we can’t confirm that it will be released, but if it does, it will without a doubt be the best postpaid plan for first-time smartphone users. The revised SmartPlan 50 and SmartPlan 78 are highlighted in red in the table below:

With the DiGi WWWOW awards, the company aims to reward the best that Malaysia’s online space has to offer. This year, DiGi will introduce a new format for the awards, consisting of three categories: Commerce, Content, and Community, allowing DiGi to award deserving Malaysians better. And boy, will you be rewarded well.

The winners of each category will win RM20,000 in cash, a 3D2N stay in a premier hotel, a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Rose Gold Edition, exclusive Google Adwords and Analytics courses, and of course several money-can’t-buy experiences such as meet-and-greet sessions with industry leaders such as Google and Waze, Yahoo and MSN.

Each award category caters to a specific online community. Celcom Samsung Galaxy S5

It looks like Celcom has finally unveiled its Samsung Galaxy S5 plans. For those who registered you interest with the telco for the device, check your email and you should see an email from them with all the plans they have got to offer; it even comes with extra 5GB of data.

Celcom Samsung Galaxy S5 Plans

According to the email, for those who registered their interest and purchase the Galaxy S5 with Celcom First plans from 11 to 13 April 2014 at any selected outlets will be able to enjoy an additional 5GB of data for 2 months. The participating outlets are as follows:

  • Blue Cube @ Sunway Pyramid
  • Blue Cube Laman Seri
  • Blue Cube Publika
  • Celcom Center, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Penang
  • Celcom Centre, Taman Molek Johor Bahru

To be launched this Friday, the Samsung Galaxy S5 retails at RM2,399 and is also available with other local telcos namely Maxis and DiGi. Stay tuned as we update our telco price comparison post.

Telco Price Comparison: Get the Samsung Galaxy S5 From As Low As RM30/Month [Updated with Celcom Bundle]

[Update: Added in Celcom's Galaxy S5 phone bundle that was announced last night, table available after the break]

The Samsung Galaxy S5 will finally hit the shelves this Friday, 11 April 2014 for a retail price of RM2,399, but you don’t have to pay full price to own one. With the existence of telcos and postpaid plans with a contract, you can get your hands on the latest flagship smartphone from Samsung at a subsidized price of as low as RM1,199. Maxis and DiGi have already opened up their preorder (Maxis’ preorders are full now, unfortunately), and while we’re waiting for Celcom and possibly U Mobile to unveil their plans, here’s a comparison of the two that are currently available.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Price ComparisonClick on image for larger version

When Maxis first announced their Galaxy S5 bundle plans, the SurfMore30 option wasn’t available. SurfMore30 may not give you a huge subsidy, but if you’re a light user and do not require all the bundles the more expensive plans comes with, it is a great option at only RM30/month. SurfMore30 is actually a supplementary line but it looks like Maxis is extending it to those who wish to get the Galaxy S5 from them.

Maxis Samsung Galaxy S5

As you already know, Maxis usually has a lot of postpaid plans to pick from but it looks like they are restricting your choice to these 6…for now at least. If Maxis is doing the same as before, these should be the plans that are offered for preorders, and the telco might be unveiling more plans after the launch this Friday.

DiGi Samsung Galaxy S5

As for DiGi, the telco isn’t offering the Galaxy S5 with their most affordable postpaid SmartPlan – SmartPlan50, so you’re only limited to 3 choices. As always, DiGi does not offer any 12 months contract and the same applies for the Galaxy S5 bundle. I must say that DiGi looks like they’re slightly cheaper than Maxis but you’ll be tied to a 2 years contract and judging by how fast new phones are being released now (we’re already looking forward to Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 powered devices), 2 years contract is a long wait.

Celcom Samsung Galaxy S5 2

Update: Celcom has just unveiled its Samsung Galaxy S5 bundle as well, allowing you to own the Galaxy S5 from as low as RM988. As usual, the telco is offering the device with its Celcom First postpaid plans coupled with data of up to 5GB, or if you’re a data-only user, you can also pick the mPro Plus plan at RM88 a month.

Of course, at the end of the day, the most important factor would definitely have to be the coverage area. Now that DiGi is offering LTE for its SmartPlans and the S5 is LTE-enabled, picking the one with LTE coverage in the areas you frequent the most would be the best choice.

Have any of you ordered the Galaxy S5 or are you waiting for the official launch to see what other telcos have got to offer? Check out our previous posts for more information about these individual plans of MaxisDiGi and Celcom.

Celcom Introduces Customer Loyalty Program Unlike Any Other for Prepaid and Postpaid Customers

 club-celcom-first-xclub-loyalty-program

Celcom has announced a new loyalty program for its pre- and postpaid customers that promises to reward them with instant rewards and add more value for their money. What separates Celcom’s new customer loyalty program from conventional loyalty programs is in the model itself: there are no points collections involved. Instead, Celcom borrows heavily from the achievement-based perks found in many popular games today.

The new customer loyalty program, dubbed Club Celcom First (for Celcom First postpaid customers), XClub (for Xpax prepaid customers) and FRENZ Club (for foreign customers) is the first such model to be used in Malaysia. Employing mechanisms popular with most mainstream games today, the program offers real-time perks to reward activities that consumers already do, such as making calls, or using mobile data.

Celcom is especially proud to note that this loyalty program is vastly different from conventional loyalty programs, which mostly involve earning points which can then be redeemed for cashbacks and rebates, exclusive discounts and even gift redemptions. Based on Celcom’s internal market research, the company found that what customers want most from loyalty programs is to reward them with things that they already use – in this case, call minutes, SMS and Internet data.

And that’s exactly what the “gamification” model of Celcom’s new loyalty program is offering. Celcom claims that this model will reward customers with various spending habits, regardless of whether they spend RM30 or RM1000 a month. Rewards are offered based on “achievements” – which can be as simple as making an IDD call to using a set amount of data per day – and are given out to customers in real time. Most gamers will see parallels between this instant rewards incentive with the words “Achievement Unlocked”, making this gamification program a highly compelling model from Celcom. At the end of each calendar year, all achievements and tiers will be reset, allowing Celcom to tweak the program to better serve its customers.

For Celcom, the data collected from the loyalty program will allow Celcom to gain invaluable insights based on almost real-time data, ultimately leading to improved customer relationship management, deliver enhanced services to customers and more importantly, deliver personalised offers that match each unique customer’s interests.

Although it officially launches today, Celcom’s loyalty program for prepaid customers, XClub, has been available since January of this year. Club Celcom First and FRENZ Club are both available to opt-in beginning today. Users can opt-in to the program by simply typing “YES” and sending to 22188. Upon successful opt-in, customers will receive a welcome message from Celcom and will be a club member for one year from the opt-in date. Club members will also be able to check their current and upcoming rewards easily both on the web and via mobile USSD codes.

To find out more about Club Celcom First and XClub, head on to www.celcomfirst.com.my/clubcelcomfirst and www.xpax.com.my/xclub respectively.

Army Veteran Receives Samsung Galaxy S5 From Celcom

Celcom Galaxy S5

Waking up early to attend Celcom’s launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5 paid off for retired military office Abdul Hamid Husin as he was gifted the smartphone for being the first in line. Abdul Hamid had arrived to the queue at 6.30am, despite the Blue Cube in Sunway Pyramid only opening it’s doors at 10am.

Abdul Hamid was overhead as saying he chose to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S5 from his current smartphone for the larger display which is easier to read, although it wasn’t clear as to what he was using before. The current trend of large displays is apparently appealing to the relatively untapped older market who until recently been avoiding smartphones due to the text size.

The crowd assembled to take advantage of the Celcom First offer for the first 100 customers to complement their Galaxy S5 purchase with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 lite for RM55; while the next 100 were offered the Samsung Galaxy Y Neo, also for RM55.

We have covered the Galaxy S5 plans from Samsung earlier this week and those interested in the packages, which goes as low as RM988 for the device, can refer to this story.

U Mobile S5 Teaser

U Mobile may be a late player in this whole Samsung Galaxy S5 telco bundle but it looks like the wait will be worth it after all…for U Mobile loyal customers at least. The telco is now teasing that they start offering the Galaxy S5 on 25 April 2014 with no upfront payment required when you sign up, meaning you only pay for the subsidized price of the device.

Unlimited Data Roaming with Malaysian Postpaid Telcos

Maxis Roaming Header

So you’ll be going away to another country for just a couple of days. It’s way too short and too troublesome to buy a local SIM pack at the country just to go online. For convenience’s sake, you wish to stick to your Malaysian line. So which telco offers the best international roaming rates in its postpaid plans? We gather all the unlimited data roaming rates here so you know which local telco to select in the place(s) you travel to, and which Malaysian telco should you roam with in order to enjoy the best data roaming rates.Malaysia Unlimited Data Roaming 1

Malaysia Unlimited Data Roaming 2

Malaysia Unlimited Data Roaming 3

Malaysia Unlimited Data Roaming 4Rates are applicable for postpaid subscribers only. Click on images for larger version

Maxis seems to offer the widest data roaming in over 100 countries at just RM38/day. 44 countries have been added in recently, but they will only take effect starting 21 April 2014. Maxis’ unlimited data roaming is based on Malaysian time from 12am until 11:59pm.

Celcom also charges the same unlimited data roaming rate of RM38 a day, but is only offering the price across 58 countries as shown above. Celcom’s rates is based on Malaysian time zone from 12am until 11:59pm.

As for things over at DiGi, the telco is offering unlimited data roaming rates from as low as RM32/day but be careful which country you travel to, because places like Belgium and Austria cost RM56/day for unlimited data roaming. The price is calculated based on the time zone in the country you are in. For example, when roaming in Thailand, the daily usage will be calculated from 12:am to 11:59pm following Thailand’s time zone.

Finally, while U Mobile may offer the most affordable data roaming rates at RM30/day, they are only offering the deal to a handful of countries. Nonetheless, the telco has only started their unlimited data roaming offer about half a year ago so I think this is a good start. Like DiGi, U Mobile’s rates is based on the time zone in the country you are in from 12am to 11:59pm.

Do note that in order to enjoy these rates, you will need to ensure that you are connected to the partner telco from the respective country. For example if you are a Celcom user travelling to Australia, make sure you connect to Vodafone in order to enjoy a data roaming rate of RM38/day. You will have to manually connect to the respective telco otherwise you will be charged at a pay-as-you-use rates – that’s how people end up racking thousands of Ringgit in roaming charges once they land in Malaysia. No registration is required, just connect to the right telco and surf away, but just be mindful of the time zone you are in and which time zone the telco follows.

Here’s how to manually select a telco when you’re in another country:

iPhone

Under Settings > Carrier, turn off Automatic and wait for the list of carriers to load. Pick the right one and you’re good to go.

iPhone Manual Network Selection

Android

Under “Network Connections” in the Settings menu, tap on “”Mobile networks” (could be buried under “More networks”), and then select “Network operators”. Wait for your phone to search for all the available networks, and pick the telco you want from the menu.

Android Manual Network Selection

Windows Phone

wp-network-select-roamingThanks for the screenshots from your new Windows Phone 8.1, haha!

Under the “Mobile Network” section in Settings, tap on “Network Selection” and the system will automatically search for available networks. Select the local network that is the preferred network partner, and you’re set.

*Note: The above screenshots were captured in Malaysia. When roaming, the network operators will vary according to which telco is available in the country. So, no, you won’t see DiGi, Maxis, Celcom or U Mobile when you’re roaming internationally.

Visit the telco’s website to find out more – Maxis, Celcom, DiGi and U Mobile.

Altel Ropes in Huawei to Build Its Own 4G LTE Network

Altel 1

Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Altel looks like it’s ready to join the big leagues. The company, which provides prepaid services including LTE leveraging on Celcom’s LTE network, has signed an agreement with Huawei to build its own LTE network.

Interestingly, Altel will still be piggybacking on Celcom’s existing LTE network as per its original agreement. The new 4G LTE network it is building will serve to work alongside Celcom’s infrastructure. This move will see Altel finally utilizing its 20% bandwidth allocation as awarded to parent company Puncak Semangat by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) way back in 2012. It is a highly intriguing one, too, as it could mean that Altel plans to upgrade from just an MVNO to a proper telecommunications provider.

Celcom Logo

Altel’s partnership with Huawei will see the latter providing wireless, core, transport and billing services to Altel, as well as business consultation services. According to Altel CEO Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Yaacob, Altel will continue to invest in its own radio network over the next five years.

This would be good news to Altel’s existing user base of around 20,000 nationwide and will surely increase the existing 2,500 authorised dealers in the future.
