It looks like Celcom is on a roll here. On top of announcing new iPhone 5S promotions and Sony Xperia T2 Ultra bundles, the telco has just introduced a new postpaid plan called the Celcom First One, an Internet plan that offers a generous amount of data from as low as RM68 a month; no prize for those who guess who Celcom is trying to troll here. Yup, Celcom is pointing the barrel straight at Maxis.
There are two Celcom First One Plans – one offers 3GB of data for RM68 while the other offers a whopping 5GB for only RM88 a month. Both plans comes packed with 60 minutes and 60 SMS, and additional data can be purchased from as low as RM15 for 1GB.
Sounds familiar? That’s because these “new” plans are actually a rebranded Celcom First Data mAdvance Plus and First Data mPro Plus, that have the exact same offering. If you can recall, in our complete list of postpaid voice plans in Malaysia, this was what mAdvance Plus and mPro Plus offered:
Both these plans have been removed from the telco’s Data page and have been replaced by these new Celcom First One Plans.
While it’s obvious who Celcom is trying to troll, Celcom and Maxis’ target market are actually completely different. Celcom’s new plans are data-centric and catered for those who need data more than anything else. Sure, RM68 for 3GB of data is cheap, but call and SMS charges are pretty expensive at 20sen/min/SMS. Maxis offers very little data of only 2GB for a whopping RM128, but its calls and SMS charges are completely free and the recent removal of FUP limit makes it even better…for those who make a lot of calls at least.
